Sept 1 2026 Data Record License becomes mandatory

As of Sept 1 2026, the provision of a creative commons record license has become mandatory. GGBN follows GBIF's example and will use "CC BY" as default if no license is provided. The list of Mandatory and recommended fields for sharing data with GGBN has been updated accordingly. We encourage our members to use CC0 or CC-BY.

April 8 2026 New search filter "DNA Type" added

GGBN uses controlled vocabulary for materialSampleType which allows general classification such as "DNA", "tissue", "specimen" etc. What kind of DNA or tissue it is is specified in the field preparationType. To enable search for different kinds of DNA we have added the new search filter "dnaType". It allows specific search for genomic DNA (gDNA) or environmental DNA (eDNA). If other types of DNA are added by our data providers (e.g. ancient DNA) it will show up in the filter as well. More such filters are planned for the future.

June 11 2025 Release of GGBN's Stable Identifiers

GGBN is now assigning stable identifiers for each material entity (e.g. DNA, tissue, environmental sample, culture, specimen). A central service synchronizes local IDs used by the data providers with the GGBN identifiers. Each identifier has its own landing page. Find out more here.
