The Instituto de Biología of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (IBUNAM), located in the main university campus in Mexico City, has as its mission conducting scientific research on the origin, maintenance, interactions, geographical distribution, current composition, rational usage, and conservation of biological diversity. As part of a public higher education institution, is also participates actively in teaching at the graduate and post-graduate levels and in public outreach of science. It holds ten national zoological collections, the national herbarium, and UNAM\'s botanical garden, besides two field stations located in the wet tropical forest region of Veracruz and the seasonally dry tropical forest of Jalisco, respectively.

Herbario Nacional

The Herbario Nacional (MEXU by its acronym in the Index Herbariorum), under the custody of the Instituto de Biología of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), holds ca. 1.6 million specimens in six collections, namely Algae, Bryophytes, Fungi, Historical Collection, Lichens, and Vascular Plants (the latter including subcollections Fruits and Seeds, Types, and Xylotheque). Nearly 1.3 million specimens are available online, in most cases including a high-resolution digital image, in our web platform IBdata 3 (www.ibdata.ib.unam.mx) and also through UNAM´s open data portal (https://datosabiertos.unam.mx/).
